Cost table
| Scenario | Power | Use time | Cost at 24.67p/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco wash, 300W for 3 hours | 300W | 3 hours | 22.20p |
| Mixed wash, 500W for 1.5 hours | 500W | 1.50 hours | 18.50p |
| Hot wash, 1,000W for 1.5 hours | 1,000W | 1.50 hours | 37.01p |
Formula
average cycle wattage ÷ 1,000 × cycle hours × electricity price = running cost
For example, a 500W washing machine used for 1.5 hours at 24.67p/kWh costs 0.5 x 1.5 x 24.67p = 18.50p.
Ways to reduce the cost
- Use 30C or eco cycles when suitable.
- Wash full loads without over-filling the drum.
- Avoid unnecessary pre-wash cycles.
- Use a high spin speed to reduce drying time.
FAQs
Why is a washing machine not always high cost?
The heater only runs for part of many cycles, so average cycle wattage is often below the peak rating.
Does a 30C wash save money?
Usually, because heating water is one of the main electricity uses in a wash.
Are eco cycles cheaper?
Often yes, even if they take longer, because they heat water more efficiently.
Does this include water?
No. It estimates electricity only.
